Step 1: Desaturate the Image The first step in sharpening a blurry photo is to desaturate the image. This will help us to see the details of the image more clearly. To desaturate the image, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or simply press the shortcut key “Ctrl + Shift + U”.
Step 2: Apply the High Pass Filter The next step is to apply the high pass filter. The high pass filter will help us to sharpen the edges in the image and make it look clearer. To apply the high pass filter, go to Filter > Other > High Pass and set the radius to a value between 1 and 3.
Step 3: Change Blend Mode After applying the high pass filter, the image will look a bit strange. However, this is normal and we’ll fix it in the next step. Go to the Layers panel, and change the blend mode of the high pass layer to “Overlay”. This will help to blend the high pass filter with the desaturated image and make it look natural.
Step 4: Adjust the Opacity The final step is to adjust the opacity of the high pass layer to achieve the desired level of sharpness. If the image is still too blurry, you can increase the opacity of the high pass layer. If the image is too sharp, you can decrease the opacity of the high pass layer.
Step 5 (optional): Duplicate the layer again for a stronger effect.
In conclusion, sharpening blurry photos in Photoshop is a simple and effective process that can significantly improve the quality of your images. By using a combination of desaturation, high pass, and blend modes, you can restore the sharpness of your photos and make them look as good as new. Happy sharpening!
